Opening Night: Random speculation from the start of the NBA season

opening night derrick rose

After what seemed like an endless offseason, It’s finally here – The 2013–14 season.  But opening night started with more of a whimper with only three games scheduled. And when a Laker team full of castoffs provides the most memorable game, you know how eventful the night really was. Still here are some takeaways from the night.

1. The Return of Allen Iverson Derrick Rose

Is it just me or did the offensively starved bulls team remind anyone else of the Sixers teams of the early 2000s? One offensive minded guard surrounded by defensive minded players who had no prayer of creating their own offense when posessions broke down? Is Derrick Rose the new AI? He is electrifying in the same way. The personalities may be different, but on court the comparison isn’t all that preposterous. Aren’t the fans rooting for the same qualities – heart, a small, explosive scoring guard entrusted night after night to carry an entire team on his shoulders, playing a physically punishing all-or-nothing style?

And speaking of Allen Iverson

2.  Derrick Rose got Iverson’d too… by no other than the awesomely average Norris Cole…

This was then…

& this is now, only far more embarrassing…

3. Welcome to the NBA Victor Oladipo

The only hype around Orlando this season (besides the the growth of Tobias Harris) was their ROY Candidate Victor Oladipo…

& The Pacers obviously took note…

4. This years Lakers may just be a bit better than expected… till kobe comes back

I have to admit watching the d-league lakers + a resurrected Gasol in a fast paced D’Antoni offense was actually quite refreshing. They already had exponentially better chemistry than last year’s team and that itself could get them more wins than predicted… but once Kobe comes back as the black garden snake (R.I.P. Mamba) , the ball stops, players think twice about shooting, things may head south…

BUT if he buys in, this team could surprise some people… like the 2010 Suns…

5. Xavier Henry may finally justify all the hype SLAM gave him in his High School days.

More on that in a bit…

Looking at Blake Griffin, it looks like he didn’t work on any of his post moves in the off season!!”

Ouch!
